Only a few years ago, electric motorcycles were considered a novelty, and few independent manufacturers devoted time or resources to growing technology. How times change; now everyone, from Triumph and Ducat to Hondai and Harley-Davidson, is aiming to get their own two-wheel EV in the market over the next few years. Smaller companys, such as Cake in Sweden and Energica in Italy, are on their second and fourth bikes, while American-based Zero currently has five on sale – some even in the second and third generations.
The electric motorcycle landscape is evolving and evolving every day; technology and performance have reached the point where battery-powered bicycles are a viable option for everyday transportation, calling their gas-powered brothers. And while the EV bicycle market is not as extensive as its combustion counterpart, there are still plenty of options to choose from. So we at Gear Patrol have curated some of our favorites that will be available this summer.
Cake Kalk
Over the past few months, Kalk Cake has won awards for its design and functionality as an off-road vehicle, keeping in mind the environmentally friendly. The strange name is Kalk & the original new road-legal version. The two are almost identical except for the Kalk license plate and direction indicators. In addition, Kalk & is given a slight distance and maximum speed to cope better with public roads; moreover, the new dual-purpose electric machine handles just as gently as the original dirt.
Zero SR / F
Zero has been building electric motorcycles since it was cool, and it shows. The SR / F is the latest product from the US manufacturer, offering new architecture, better battery technology, and performance, better fit and finish on the table with previous Zero motorcycles. The SR / F is the first zero to have a TFT display and Bluetooth for a more modern experience. Stat, for stat, the Zero SR / F is one of the few electric motorcycles that can go from toe to toe with its gas-fired equivalents.
Energica Ego
Considering the naturally lightweight chassis of the motorcycle and the powerful, instantaneous electric motors that can fold out, high-performance electric sports bikes were inevitable. Energica is one of the first manufacturers to focus exclusively on train-friendly motorcycles, and Ego is the latest model from the Italian brand. The Ego has 148 lb-ft of torque and 145 horsepower; however, as with electric motorcycles, the more power you use, the faster your battery will run out. So, although Energic can cause disturbing commuters from Monday to Friday, some superbikes can go awry this weekend.
Lightning Strike
Whether it’s a nose or a name like “Lightning Strike”, the electric superbike boasts some impressive performance figures. It looks like a complete race hall, but it’s more effective than seeing the eye. While lightning requires 180 lb-ft of torque, the staggering stat ranges from up to 20 kWh of the battery; good for 150 miles of highway riding and 200 miles of urban use. Of course, these numbers come with a price: The 20 kWh battery starts at $ 19,995, while the entry-level 10 kWh Lightning Strike, which is 70 miles off the freeway and 100 miles around the city, starts at $ 12,998.
Vespa Electrica
Vespa is one of the few major manufacturers in the two-wheeler industry that has brought EVs to showrooms on the prototype stage. The range and energy performance of the entire list are the least impressive – but keep in mind that with the healthy margin of the Vespa Electrica, it is also the most affordable vehicle.
